Garage Door...How Long for?
How long have garages been around for? Garages are a practical and handy part of a house that we don’t tend to give much thought too. This also includes their history and how garages have developed and changed throughout the years. Logically, due to the growing amount of cars in history, there was a need to store them safely. Initially horse and carriage was a mean of travel and those who could afford it would have their stables kept away from the house, due to odour. However, once the motor car came about, these stables kept their cars safe instead, hence the ‘garage’ was born. Eventually as time went by, the garage was made part of the home, rather than something to hide away. Quite often the building materials were pre-made timber or brick. From the 1920s garages panelled with asbestos were used, becoming more popular from 1945. Unfortunately, the removal of asbestos in older homes is becoming a stress for many home owners nowadays.
Due to stables being the original ‘garage’, some people opted to have garage doors that hinted towards this era. However due to cars getting larger and filling space quickly, a plan was needed to keep things organised, particularly when the motor car became popular. Stable doors were swapped for practical, sectional ones that were bigger. Eventually in the future, remote controlled doors became a thing in the late 70s and got better, smarter and more functional as time went by.
