What To Do With Rusty Doors?

The door to your garage helps to protect your home and car from bad weather and trespassers. This is why it is important to keep it working properly and checked regularly, to keep it from getting worn out and rusty. Due to our unpredictable weather, the risk of rusting is higher, particularly with ageing garage doors. You can spot rust by recognising brown patches on the surface of the door, either on the door itself or on the joints. Quite often rust will appear at the bottom of the door, from having sat in any pooling water. Generally, older doors will be more likely to rust, due to any materials used that may not be as robust or high quality. Nowadays garage doors can have a coating on them to help defend against the damp.

Although you can’t turn back time once a door has rusted, you can try to prevent it by using certain materials for the door. GRP (Glass reinforced polyester) can be a good choice instead of metal, due to the lack of corrosion it faces. Timber is a great alternative due to it not being able to rust, but it needs to be looked after to keep it looking good. If you still want a metal door, aluminium is a naturally rust resistant metal, which would keep maintenance down at the same time. Whatever material you choose, keeping your garage door properly maintained by a professional is important, to keep any issues at bay.
